Christopher Brennan Poem (2010)

This is a commissioned piece I did in mid-March, for somebody who was intending to read this poem while  proposing on bended knee to the girl he wanted to marry.

A similar piece usually takes me 7 or 8 hours to do, approximately two-thirds of which is spent ruling up the sheet and writing everything lightly in pencil first.  (The actual writing is, in fact, the easy part.)  But fortunately this piece was sent to me already typed and nicely laid out, so, apart from minor tweaks, I did not have to work out line spacing and x-height myself.

An easy job, then, though it came at a time when I thought I couldn’t get any busier!

  1. This is such a lovely piece. I'm about to start a class on copperplate next month and found look at your work very inspiring.

  2. Thank you, Caligrafica! I'm only an amateur, and self-taught, so your kind praise is a little embarrassing, particularly as your own work is so fantastic. I love your splendid Gothic -- it's a script I've never mastered, and is right at the top of my 'to learn' list.

Have fun with the Copperplate -- I find The Universal Penman (1741) a wonderful resource, though there's nothing in the way of instruction there.

  4. Hi,
My name is Sam Fadlil. I worked as a calligrapher in New York City for about 15 years before returning to Indonesia. I used to do traditional manuscripts, illumination, scroll etc.

Italic is my favorite (we didn't use much at all). I still do it from time to time. Love to do it again.

  5. Hi, Sam

Interesting to hear you worked as a calligrapher in NY and are now back in Indonesia. I'm sure you did more script/Spencerian than Italic in NY. I'll forward your message to Deanna.

    All the best,

    Ludwig

  9. G'day!

You've done a lovely job with the poem, and it is a pleasure to see Brennan's work presented in such an attractive fashion.

I am, as it happens, a Brennan scholar, and am working on a number of projects related to him and his writing.

    Thank you,

    Phillip
