Guests (June 2003)
I was recently reminded of this when I stayed with two Scottish friends — I had written it for them as a parting gift on June 8, 2003, shortly before I left the UK for good.
The main message is at first glance complimentary — Our guests always give us pleasure. But the smaller text below adds, seemingly in a whisper, Some by coming, others by leaving.
I can’t remember where I got this quote from, but if you do a Google search you’ll probably find different variants of it attributed to different people.

Hi, i came across your blog by googling "western calligraphy". I would like to take up calligraphy again as the last time i did it was in secondary school and i really love it.
ReplyDeletecould you please share some of the resources for calligraphy as i couldn't seem to find anything useful from the nationa library.
Hi, Sharon
ReplyDeleteReally sorry for taking so long to reply.
I'd suggest going to Kinokuniya Ngee Ann City for a look -- they have a good selection of calligraphy books. One of the books I started out with was "Calligraphy in Ten Easy Lessons" (Winters & Lico), which is very clear. I think also saw a book by Mary Noble and Janet Mehigan; they're good too. Other authors you can look out for are Stuart David and someone with the surname Wong (I can't remember his first name). Some books have quite awful alphabets -- do have a look and see which ones you like, and if you'd like, do check with me (but I'll be away till August 11).
Have fun!
